Welcome to the Laurel High School International Baccalaureate Model United Nations (LHS IB MUN) Website!
The Laurel High School International Baccalaureate (IB) Model United Nations (MUN) organization was founded on the 10th of February 2009 and was established on the 7th of June 2010.
Laurel High School's IB Model UN, believes that education is the essential foundation with which we acquire the necessary knowledge, awareness, understanding and the skills that will enable us, as adults and future leaders, to help solve problems that are of global significance in an effective manner. The IB MUN, an academic based organization here at Laurel High School, is foremost student-centered, student-organized and developed, and student run organization and simulations program. You become a part of an exclusive group of academically motivated students. In IB MUN, the students shall lead and participate in model sessions of the United Nations as means to advance their awareness and understanding of the principles and methods by which international relations can be established and maintained. IB MUN enhances the student's knowledge of the world's nations, their diversity of cultures, the relationship between the nations, their policies and their involvement and effort in the United Nations organization.
The IB MUN organization instructs and helps prepares students to conduct original researches, organize their notes and information, write position and resolution papers, and present and debate issues from the position of a country of their choice. Members learn about the historical facts and current affairs about their country of choice and become experienced in recognizing developments that influence their chosen country's policies. Additionally, the members learn the nature and means of negotiation, mediation, compromise, resolution drafting, and about individual and organization leadership. Members furthermore are then able to put their knowledge and skills to the test by participating local-regional conferences where the United Nations proceeding are simulated. IB MUN works with the "IB Learner Profile" in developing students who learn to become: Inquirers, Risk-Takers, Knowledgeable, Critical Thinkers, Open-Minded, and Communicators.
The four established organs of IB MUN consist of the:
- General Assembly
- Secretariat
- Sponsor/Mentor
- Senior Advisory
Essentially, IB MUN does provide a profoundly academic organization here at Laurel High School, providing the opportunity for students to take on the roles of diplomats and debate effectively on pressing world issues to form a resolution. IB MUN provides you with a truly international experience and even allows you to meet other academically motivated individuals just like you!
Furthermore, all members of the Laurel High School IB MUN Organization, agree to abide by the LHS IB MUN Organizational Charter.
